These shorts are made from my Great, Great, Great Grandmothers hand-stitched yellow Sunburst quilt from the early 1800's. By the time I got into quilting and quilting history, my family had already passed along all of our family quilts, like many families do. Or so we thought. In July 2021, while my Grandma Mimi was going throug her family heirlooms, she came across this quilt that she had never seen before. She then brough it to her sister, Sue, who helped her research that it was made by their great grandmother. She learned that she was a big quilter amongst her community in the Northeast, around Virgina. She inspired me to carry on the legacy of her family through this family quilt. It is called a Sunburst, amongst other names, which truly signifies the California sunshine that I continually embody in my work.
The lapel and collar are made from a mid-century yellow wool blanket.
