This is a pre-1880 Double Irish Chain Quilt. It is in chrome, turkey red, and teal green. It comes from a prominent estate in Maine, and was lightly used. The only wear is from sun fading, meaning it was displayed close to a window. Sunflower medallions fill the open chrome colored blocks. The back was pulled to the front in a sawtooth pattern and handstitched in the front to create the binding. An early representation of appliqué. An example of an underutilized and under appreciated masterpiece of early domestic art.
